The New Farm Lane - Underpasses ConstructionRoads - The New Farm Lane – Underpasses Construction

STATUS: In-Construction (Phase I and II)

Farm Lane is now closed to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists from the commuter lot (Lot 89) north to Trowbridge Road. The Farm Lane/Service Road intersection is closed from the Laundry parking lot (Lot 88) on the west to the Lewis Landscape Arboretum parking lot (Lot 101) on the east. A small section of Farm Lane, from Mt. Hope Road to the commuter lot, will remain open until spring semester ends on May 4, 2008.
Detour routes will be posted, using the following roads in and around campus: Harrison Road, Mt. Hope Road, Hagadorn Road, Wilson Road, Bogue Street, Red Cedar Road, Trowbridge Road and Shaw Lane.

More about the project:
The Farm Lane Underpasses project will lower Farm Lane under two railroad crossings: the Canadian National (CN) line just north of Service Road and the CSX line just north of the commuter lot (Lot 89) at the corner of Mt. Hope Road and Farm Lane. Eliminating the current at-grade railroad crossings on Farm Lane will increase safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, and decrease response times for emergency vehicles. Lowering Farm Lane will also improve access along this main north/south route through MSU. Improved traffic flow will allow CATA buses to stay on schedule. The project is a joint partnership between the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan State University. MDOT will administer the design and construction of the project. It has two phases beginning October 2007 and ending the summer of 2009.

Engineering Building - Barrier Free ParkingEngineering Building - Barrier Free Parking
STATUS: In-Design

The Engineering Building is located on the corner of South Shaw Lane and Red Cedar Road in the Central Academic District. The project will complement the College of Engineering’s desire to make the west side of the building a new “front door” to the building. The existing loading dock area will be shifted north and have a loop driveway entrance to accommodate four barrier-free parking spaces with heated pavement, two delivery vans and three service vehicles. The vestibule will add 400 square feet of floor area with automatic doors for handicapper accessibility. The landscape design will implement the “wooded grove concept” delineated in MSU’s 2020 Vision master plan update.

The project will provide safe barrier-free parking on the west side of the complex; improve vehicular and pedestrian safety along Red Cedar Road and; eliminate unsafe off-street service vehicle parking along Red Cedar Road adjacent to the existing loading dock.

MSU Surplus Store and Recycling CenterMSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center
STATUS: In-Bidding

The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center site is on 9 acres along the west side of Farm Lane, north of the CSX railroad in the Service District. The new 70,000 square-foot building will house recycling and relocate surplus activities. The site also will have a truck scale, exterior storage areas for compost, concrete and metal scrap, and space for roll-off and semi-trailer storage containers. A recycling education center also will be part of the facility. The building will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified.

As the University moves to significantly enhance its position with environmental stewardship, the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center becomes a major component of this change. A comprehensive recycling plan will be implemented over the couple of years with the first major focus on five materials: white paper, mixed paper, newspapers, cardboard and plastic. By the time the facility comes online in July 2009, the current campus recycling of those materials must double as they are the primary revenue drivers to make the facility self-supporting.

In addition to recycling, the facility will be the new home of MSU Surplus, which will move from its current site on Harrison Road. The synergies between recycling and Surplus are intertwined and will result in an enhanced ability to meet the three R’s — reduce, reuse and recycle materials from campus.
