Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Project Notes/Questions:

Harrison Road Reconstruction

  • Dates are still tentative, contingent upon funding and contractor awards
  • Construction will take place between Kalamazoo and Trowbridge
  • Work involves pulverizing the existing pavement and some base removal and replacement
  • Replacement of water main will occur in the southbound lane
  • Project will begin in June, spanning two seasons
    • Phase 1
      • Concentrates on southbound section between Kalamazoo and Shaw Lane
      • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to the east side of the median.
      • Marigold, Lilac, and Shaw will be closed at Harrison Road
    • Phase 2
      • Concentrates on the northbound section between Kalamazoo and Shaw
      • Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction but shifted to the west side of the median.
      • Marigold, Lilac, and Shaw will remain closed at Harrison Road
      • Phase II of the project is expected  to end by August 20, 2010, and then it will sit idle until June 2011
    • Phase 3
      • Phase III is expected to begin in June 2011 and concentrates on both northbound and southbound Harrison between Trowbridge and Shaw
      • Area between Shaw and Trowbridge will be closed during construction
      • Harrison Road traffic will be detoured to campus using Trowbridge, Red Cedar, and Shaw.
      • Sever, Lilac, and Wilson will be closed at Harrison Road
      • Phase III of the project is expected  to end by August 20, 2011
  • Trowbridge to Mt. Hope will be reconstructed in 2012
  • Check the City of East Lansing’s website for more construction updates

Q: Is the island on Marigold going to be gone permanently?
A: No, only temporarily – it will be taken out to service the Islamic Center and School
Q: Will there be any street lights replaced?
A: No.
Q: Will there be access to the Breslin Center during Phase II?
A: Yes, access will be possible via Shaw Lane, but motorists will have to access Shaw from Kalamazoo Street and Red Cedar Road as the Harrison/Shaw intersection will be closed.
Q: Will the railroad crossing be modified at all in 2012?
A: There is a plan to redo the north set of tracks this summer.

Tree Improvements around Demonstration Field

  • Removal of the trees will be done in order to restore the field to an original layout design
  • The goal is to beautify the corridor
  • 60 percent of the scope of work has already been installed
  • The existing Norway Maples will removed after graduation.
  • 13 trees will be removed this spring
  • 23 Sienna Glen Maples will be installed
  • Work will start this May, after graduation
  • Project will only cause minor traffic and pedestrian disruption
  • Be(ing) Spartan Green
    • Wood chips from the removed trees will be recycled and burned at MSU’s power plant

Q: What is the size of the trees being planted?
A: Approximately 2.5 inch calibers.

Life Science - Addition No. 1

  • Addition will be on the north side of Life Science
  • The road will be maintained during the project, and green space will be used for construction set-up
  • The building will be a three-story element to the north and a one-story building in the middle of the new and existing buildings
  • The service dock will be maintained during construction
  • Basement contains all electrical and mechanical equipment
  • First floor – includes gathering space, classrooms, a student lounge, and staff support
  • Second floor – contains all dry research and community outreach for faculty, Ph.D. students, and seminar room
  • Third floor – includes the same amenities as the second floor
  • Construction begins in June and Life Science will be occupied by the end of 2011
  • Be(ing) Spartan Green
    • Will use a geothermal system for heat and air conditioning – it will be located in the IM field below the frost line

Bailey Hall Renovation

  • Second residence hall of six to be renovated in Brody
  • Bailey will be taken offline for one year:  May 2011-June 2012
  • Repair of the exterior brick and mortar is required
  • Changes to Bailey Hall include:
    • The existing community bathrooms will be demolished and reconfigured
    • Replacement of all windows throughout building
    • Upgrades to life safety equipment and fire alarm system
    • Renovation of existing freight elevator to a passenger elevator
    • Wireless internet to be available in the courtyard
    • New reception area and recycling center
    • Renovation of the resident advisor apartments on the first floor
    • Curtain glass wall to “harvest the daylight” in lobby
    • A new patio will be installed
    • Green roof will be constructed over the existing loading lock area
    • ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility ramps will be added
    • Center space will be cooled – all four floors will be cooled
  • Second floor
    • New student government offices
    • More office space for (DREW) the Charles Drew Science Scholars Program and (RISE) the Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment
    • Access to the green roof (to be decided)
  • Third floor
    • Community kitchen
    • Laundry room
  • Fourth floor
    • Laundry room
    • Gaming location
    • Wellness activity area

Cyclotron - Study for Phase II Office Addition

  • This is an MSU-funded commitment to the Facilities for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), it is not the FRIB
  • Phase I was done in an effort to leverage MSU for the FRIB project
  • Phase II will begin in fall 2010
  • Offices will be both flexible and fixed
  • Will bring in new steam and electric
  • Phase II
    • First floor
      • A lecture hall with a capacity of 124
      • Large conference room
      • Address entry – opening up circulation and making it more aesthetically pleasing
    • Second floor
      • Working mostly on offices and connecting bridge
    • Third floor and fourth floor
      • Working on more office space
      • Tried to break building down and make it into smaller pieces so that people walking by it feel more comfortable
  • There will be a mechanical penthouse on the fifth floor

Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum

  • Groundbreaking event successfully held in March
  • There will be a temporary closure on Grand River Avenue through around May 16
  • East Circle Drive will remain open until after graduation, but closes around May 10 from Farm Lane to just west of the Lot 8 (Student Services) parking lot
  • Lot 8 will remain open for parking, but a temporary access drive will be built just west of the existing entrance
  • Detour maps available online will show motorist, pedestrian and barrier-free access
  • The webcam is live now, but not embedded online. We will provide a link when it is available

Steam/Water/Communication Distribution - Repairs and Improvements - Physical Plant, Landscape Services, DPPS, Audio/Speech  

  • Segment 1 will be completed by April 23, 2010
  • Segment 2 closes April 26
  • MSU Police lot (north side of building) closes May 10
  • Find out much more regarding segments by reviewing the phasing diagram        

Brody Complex Utility Infrastructure Improvements

  • Installation of water main and other utilities
  • Rainy weather has slowed progress
  • Southeast of Emmons Hall Road closed. More to come on Emmons impacts next month.

Cyclotron - Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Utility Relocation Phase I

  • The cost of this project is $6.2 million and it was authorized to proceed six weeks ago
  • In order to support FRIB, several utilities need to be rerouted
  • Project will be expedited in order to save money
  • Sewers will be rerouted
  • Reroute existing utilities to support new buildings
  • Construction will occur between May 10 and mid-August
  • Somewhere between May 10 and end of June, the intersection of Bogue Street and Wilson Road will be closed

Special note regarding Lot 101 (off Service Road):

  • This lot will be closed the week of April 12 to allow contractors access to the Farm Lane detention ponds

Secchia Center

  • Mainly carpeting floors two through six
  • Furniture has been delivered and is being installed
  • Doors will be swinging this month (April)
  • Rooms will contain a sensor to dim lights inside based on the amount of sunlight from the window
  • Conservatory will be on the eighth floor – construction to start next month
  • Outdoor and indoor space will be available to hold events
  • Planters will be on tracks so they can move – vine wall
