Construction Planning and Progress Meeting

Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Temporary Closure of Ramp No. 5 (Communications Arts and Sciences Building)

  • The ramp, located just south of the Communication Arts and Sciences building, will close Aug. 13 and reopen on Aug. 21.
    • The entire ramp will undergo resurfacing during this time
  • Alternative parking is available in Lot 79 (south of Spartan Stadium) and Lot 39 (located south of the International Center and north of the Engineering Building)

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) Phase 2B Utilities Relocation (Bogue Street closure planned)

  • Bogue Street will be closed (from Shaw Lane to Wilson Road) during the project, with a temporary drive allowing barrier-free access to the Wharton Center

Q: How long is the closure?
A:
Through June 2012.

Q: Will the utility work cause interruptions?
A:
No, the existing lines stay until we switch over.

Q: What size are the lines for chilled water?
A:
Two 20-inch lines, one for supply and one for return.

Akers Hall – Refurbish Passenger and Freight Elevators

  • Elements of the elevators, such as the cabs and call signals, need to be replaced
    • Lighting in the machine room will be also be improved
  • Of the two elevators located in each wing, one will be in operation at all times
    • Two elevators will be available during student move-in times
  • The project is scheduled to begin in May and end in December 2012

Chestnut Road Reconstruction and New Steam Tunnel to I.M. West

  • Closure of Chestnut Road will be from Spartan Stadium’s west entrance drive to just north of the I.M. West pool
  • Demonstration Hall Road will be resurfaced during the project
  • Two bike lanes will be added from Wilson Road to West Circle Drive
  • Construction will run from May 2012 through Aug. 17, 2012

Q: Will the Munn loading dock be kept open?
A:
Yes, we will be working in phases to keep the dock functional.

Q: Will the road be completely closed?
A:
Yes.

Harrison Road Reconstruction

  • Most of Harrison Road was paved this past Saturday, Aug. 6; however,  some work is left due to rainy weather
    • Paving and striping planned to happen tentatively Friday morning (Aug. 12) and striping
    • Some disruptions may occur Monday morning (Aug. 15) due to striping
    • Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area for now until the striping is complete
  • The splitter island at Marigold Avenue will be reinstalled once road opens
  • In September/October, some planting of trees is expected along Harrison Road;  expect some sporadic lane closures

Cherry Lane/Faculty Bricks Apartments Demolition

  • All Faculty Bricks buildings are now demolished
    • The first of Cherry Lane’s buildings are beginning to come down
  • Tree protection/fencing is in place
  • No future site development plans for the site at this time
  • Top soil is being brought in today (Aug. 11)
  • Brick, steel, wood is stripped from buildings before demolition, materials recycled when possible
    • Asbestos abatement also occurs before demolition
  • Wilson Road (from Birch Road to Harrison Road) is currently closed
    • Once Harrison Road is reopened, the closed portion of Wilson Road will also become available

Q: How are the buildings demolished?
A:
An excavator is used to demolish the buildings from the roof down. The recyclable materials are then extracted (brick is removed before demolition for recycling).

Shaw Lane Power Plane Smokestack Demolition

  • Stack is now completely demolished, and most of the white bricks have been saved
  • Some red bricks have also been retained from recycling
    • These materials have been sent to the MSU Surplus Store for sale
  • A few windows in the power plant were broken during demolition and will be replaced
  • The project is scheduled to be substantially complete by Aug. 19
  • The detour located north of the project is now mostly open

Wells Hall Addition

  • On Aug. 26, project will reach its one year in construction milestone
  • Currently on budget and on schedule
    • Ahead of schedule with the addition: mechanical/electrical elements are all complete and the walls have been studded out
  • In the existing B-wing of Wells Hall: walls have been repainted, new flooring has been installed, sound systems have been replaced and the original seating has been reinstalled
  • The computer labs will be reopened for the first day of classes (Aug. 31)
  • Entrances on People’s Park side of the building (east) will reopen soon
    • Please be aware of fencing near these entrances and ongoing work
  • The coffee shop located on the ground level will open in October
  • Exterior stonework on the addition has been installed and glass curtain wall will be going in soon
    • Windows are starting to be installed
  • The Red Cedar Road closure will be in place Aug. 19 to 28, to improve the bike lanes
    • The Wells Hall loading dock will remain available

Case Hall Renovations

  • The ceilings have been demolished and replaced
  • The addition is 10,000 square feet
  • A new sidewalk snow melt system is being put in at the north entrance
  • A Sparty’s store will be built in this location
  • The Case student wings have been renovated
    • Renovations include improved safety features, new carpet in corridors and improved showers
  • The project is on schedule and on budget
  • The basement has new mechanical systems and new air handling units

Bott Building for Nursing Education and Research

  • The  new three-story building is an addition to the Life Sciences Building
  • Bay savers have been installed on the project site, to separate silt from storm water in an effort to reduce water pollution
  • The foundation of the building has been dug and concrete walls are being installed
  • The coils in the geothermal field are being installed
  • Detours, in place on south Bogue Street, are located east of the project through June 2012

Emmons Hall Renovation

  • The exterior elements of the building are complete
  • New enunciator panels track and display security elements and fire alarms to ensure the safety of students
  • The community bathrooms have been renovated
  • The hall now has a communal kitchen area
    • Renovation includes a large two-story student lounge and study space
  • The fire safety elements in the building have been upgraded
  • A barrier-free access ramp has been added to the ground level
  • An energy recovery unit on the roof recaptures heat and recycles it into the building

Brody Complex Utility Infrastructure Improvements Phase III

  • The steam tunnels along Kalamazoo Street are being renovated
    • Work is being done on the duct bank also
  • During September, there will be a lane taper for excavation work, but Kalamazoo Street will remain open
  • Workers are currently focused on mechanical and water main work
    • Communication duct bank work will take place at Harrison Road
  • There is a small delay on the project, but sidewalks north of Breslin Students Events Center will be open soon

Steam Tunnel to Spartan Stadium and Central Services

  • The project is now covered by top soil
  • Work will continue on a small area near Central Services Building for the installation of a pedestrian ramp

Bailey and Rather Hall Renovations

  • Building elevators will be converted from freight to passenger
  • Interior demolition on the project is 90 percent
    • Asbestos abatement took place before demolition
  • Many interior walls are being demolished to open up the space
  • The exterior balconies are being removed
  • Rather Hall’s additional study lounge on the west side of the building has been removed
  • The project also includes site work for Emmons Hall
    • Sidewalks to Brody Hall are nearly complete and will be open next week (Aug. 15-19)
    • The new amphitheatre will be open next year
  • The Brody Neighborhood road closures, located in front of Bailey and Rather Halls, will remain in place until May 2012
