Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Emmons Hall Renovation
 
  • Emmons is the first of six residence halls to be renovated in the Brody Neighborhood
    • Renovation work on Bailey will begin in May 2011 
  • The road entrance to Emmons from Harrison Road remains closed through 2011
    • Traffic is able to access the area from Michigan Avenue
  • Building is fully enclosed and heated
  • Main work is currently happening in the community bathrooms
    • Tiling
    • Plumbing
  • New paint and light fixtures will be installed in resident rooms
  • Framing is taking place in the core area of the building
  • Energy recovery unit is located on roof
    • Heat saving function returns recycled heat back to the building

Brody Hall Renovation

  • Current work in first floor office areas
    • All the painting is done on the exposed ceiling
    • Working on caulking and installing doors
    • Huge carpet installation 
    • Light fixtures are all Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified
  • Student workrooms
    • Doors being installed, currently working on ceiling
    • Walls in area are painted
  • North circulation desk
    • Columns to be covered and flooring is installed
  • Sparty’s
    • Equipment in kitchen area is installed
    • Kitchen area is painted
    • Booth areas currently being installed
  • Work is also occurring in employee locker rooms
  • Still working on mechanical components on first floor
  • Work is being done in the north of the building first and moving south
  • The contractor is finishing up some minor work issues in the loading dock and mechanical areas
  • Goal is to move in most employees by April and have all in by the end of May

Wells Hall Addition

  • The existing B-wing will be available to be used for classes this fall
  • Phase 1 of the project should be finished by the end of this month
    • Steel structure is currently being erected
  • Demolition work is completed
  • Coffee shop will be located underneath currently constructed steel
  • Fun fact: the steel plates are all held together by small bolts
    • To signal the proper amount of torque, the end of the bolt pops off
  • Approximately twenty five people are currently working on site
Q: One of the pictures appeared to have a basement area, was that always there?
A: Yes, air handling equipment for all the auditoriums is located there.

Q: So all on street parking will be eliminated?
A: Yes, with the exception of about four parking spaces

Q: What is stronger, a welded or bolted connection for steel?
A: I’m not sure, I will bring that answer back for next time.

Q: What dictates whether it is welded or bolted?
A: It’s a design consideration, but I will bring back the answer for next month.
 
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum
  • The project has now moved on to the next phase of materials: steel
  • Area is being heated where concrete is being poured
  • First deck is topped with reinforcement steel and ready to have concrete poured poured
  • Much of the first level is going to be gallery space, which is why a lot of the space is open
  • Some areas have already moved to the second floor walls and concrete has been poured
  • Building will be clad with glass and stainless steel
  • Conduit is being installed in the lower level
    • Shoring will be cleared out next month
  • Steel will begin to be installed in March
  • The corners of the concrete walls are very tight, and the tie-holes in the walls are architectural elements
  • East Circle Drive remains closed through 2011 
Q: Is the water going to be softened in the building, both hot and cold?
A: It will have a water softener, but I will have to get back to you regarding the temperatures.

Q:  Will the walkways be lighted?
A: Yes, the walkways will be lighted.

Q: When will final completion be?
A: December 2011.

Q: When will it be open to the public?
A: Early spring 2012.

Q: What are the windows for humidity and temperature in regards to the artwork?
A: We have a two degree window for humidity and a five degree window for temperature.

Q: Have there been any big changes since the new director has come on board?
A: We are very excited to have Michael Rush as director of the museum. We may make some adjustments based on what he needs, but we are not expecting any big changes.
 
Cyclotron Office Addition Phase 2
  • Addition will consist of a four-story building
    • Adds 27,000 square feet of office space
      • 40 permanent new spaces
      • 100 spaces for visiting staff
      • A 230-seat lecture hall
  • Addition includes a connecting bridge to existing Phase 1 building
  • The areas of the building that are covered in blue tarp mark where the buildings will connect
  • Additional walls have been built in the foundation
  • Earth retention system is complete; working on building forms in basement area
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) have been followed in the process of demolition
    • All materials from demolition have been recycled
  • Eastbound Shaw Lane, just past the Chemistry building, is now down to one lane for the duration of the project
    • Pedestrians at east end of Chemistry Building are routed to cross north to sidewalk in front of parking structure
    • Pedestrians at corner of Bogue/Shaw are routed north to use sidewalk on other side of eastbound Shaw
Cyclotron High-Bay Addition
  • High-bay research are will have 40-ton crane installed, along with a mechanical penthouse
  • There won’t be a basement for the high bay, just concrete forms
  • The steam vault will be located under the floor of the high bay
  • The addition will be all brick
  • Presently digging and installing footings for building
    • Also working on placement and construction of new steam vault
  • Entrance  into Cyclotron personnel south parking area was re-routed in October
  • Road access on the east side of Cyclotron has been closed since October
    • Pedestrians have access to east sidewalk along Bogue  in both directions
Plant Science Expansion
  • Currently, 50 men are working on site
    • Installing all overheard utilities
    • Duct work, acid waste, fire protection, etc.
  • Closing ground access this week
  • All the structural steel has been fireproofed
  • Shoring has been installed under connecting area on the east side of the structure
  • The penthouse area has been prepped for flooring
    • The cold doesn’t hinder this area, but snow blows in and melts in the heating area
      • Work is being held off to avoid this
  • Area on first floor covered in brick marks where vending machines will be
  • Framing will go up and glass will be installed in the next month
  • The one lane closure on Wilson Road will remain through 2011 for material delivery
Q: How many feet is allocated for the vending area?
A: I’m not sure; I will have to get back to you on that next month.
 
Q: How is the mechanical space accessed?
A: Through an area on the north side of the building.
 
Q: When is the project supposed to be finished?
A: This fall.
 
All University Traffic and Transportation Committee
  • Reviews and recommends solutions to campus parking, traffic and transportation problems
  • Meets monthly
Q:  Has there been any thought on giving one lane to bicyclists in the two lane roads on campus?
A: That has been considered, we are exploring options that we are seeing at other campuses; it would be a big change though.
 
Q: Does the new commuter parking plan include a bus pass?
A: It does, but your employee ID also gives you those privileges.
