Construction Planning and Progress Meeting

Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

    • Steam Distribution and Road Reconstruction – Wilson and Birch Roads

    • The New Farm Lane construction update

    • Cyclotron renovation/addition due to acceptance of FRIB award

    • Surplus and Recycling Center construction update

Project Notes/Questions

Steam Distribution and Road Reconstruction – Wilson & Birch Roads

  • Construction process will begin on Feb. 2
  • Road reconstruction picks up from where it was last summer
  • New steam tunnel will connect to existing tunnel; new water pipe will be installed
  • Hot water will temporarily be disabled in Holden Hall; hot water heaters will be brought in
  • On Wilson Road, two 4-foot-wide bike lanes will be paved and one crosswalk will be removed
  • Parking lot will be reworked on Birch Road
  • Starting in February, Birch road will be shut down first. Because it is disruptive, sheet piling will occur during spring break. Construction will be quiet during final exam week.
  • In April, Wilson Hall loading will shut down for a short time; exact time will be coordinated with hall managers.

Q: When will Wilson Hall be closed?
A: Wilson loading dock will be closed between end of school year and freshmen conference preparation.
Q: Will access to Cherry Lane Apartments be shut down at all?
A: No, it will always stay open.
Q: What is the exact starting date of Segment One?
A: Feb. 2
Q: How wide will the steam pipelines be?
A: Five feet or four feet, depending on the location.

The New Farm Lane construction update

  • Over the holidays (since the Dec. 12 meeting), not a lot of changes
  • Contractor has continued site excavations
  • CSX structure is progressing, but is behind schedule
  • Water mains have been built
  • New loop drive up to the recycling center has successfully been added
  • Northwest retaining wall and storm drainage is being put in

Cyclotron

  • MSU got the FRIB project which was confirmed in mid-December
  • The project is on schedule
  • All the steel structures are up
  • The steel structures that have already been constructed will become new office space for physicists
  • Steel sheets will be placed onto the structures
  • After the sheets are laid, concrete will be poured to make the floors.
  • During the week of the Jan. 12, a giant generator will be brought in to place studs
  • Generator will operate for about two weeks
