Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Project Notes/Questions:
 

Erickson Hall Window Replacement update

  • Older building needed to be renewed
  • Needed to reduce water infiltration into the building
  • No installation barriers with new replacement
  • Will maintain landmark status of Erickson Hall
  • Refurbished the building exterior which will increase longevity
  • Added extra entrances to the building
  • Constructed an extra handicap-accessible entrance
  • Added entrance to the kiva
  • Finished ahead of the schedule and below budget
Be(ing) Spartan Green
  • Windows reduce heating and cooling loads within the building
  • Windows are tinted green glass, this provides more daylight and less glare
  • Using less fluorescent lighting
  • Recycled 98 percent of construction waste material
Q: Of the four entrances, how many are power-assisted?
A: Now with the addition, there are five power-assisted entrances.

John and Marnie Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center

  • Located on Jolly Road
  • The facility includes:
  • Indoor archery
  • Indoor air rifle range
  • Offices, conferences room(s), team facilities
  • Outdoor archery
  • Ballistics ranges — Eight lanes each, .22-caliber pistol and rifles only
  • Construction began in winter of 2008
  • Goal is to create a family experience
  • Parents will be able to view children’s sports through large installed windows
  • Outdoor Archery Park
  • Beginner range (50 feet)
  • Competition range (70 meter and 90 meter)
  • 3-D target/field range — elevated and flat with broad-head pits
  • Steel installed in all shooting areas
  • Ballistics area
  • Stationary firing line
  • Bullet disposal area
  • Trap system will collecting bullet
  • Excess bullets drop into 5-gallon buckets
  • Ventilation system
  • Collects all lead dust from shooting area
  • Large HVAC system
  • Substantial completion is set for July, it will be open to the public August
Q: Is there an outdoor skeet range?
A: No, there is only an outdoor archery range.

MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Facility

  • To open in July/August
  • Grand opening tentatively set for Sept. 10 when fall semester starts
  • Moving on schedule
  • Recycling area and south end is complete
  • Bailing equipment is installed

Secchia Center

  • Continue working on the inside of the structure
  • Working on many different floors
  • Drywall will be complete by end of the summer
  • Look at the status of the center on the webcam

Wharton Center

  • Construction is substantially complete
  • There will be three phases
  • Phase II — Third and first floor ticket office as of June 8, 2009
  • Phase I — Back of house since March 2009
  • The front glass is complete with signage
  • Ticket office is complete and occupied
  • Third floor is complete and occupied
  • Employees moved into the office area
  • The interior renovation (Phase III) is underway which includes changes to first-, second- and third-floor interior space
  • Ticket office sales and support moved into the first-floor ticket office and assorted administrators and support staff moved into third floor and the third-floor mezzanine.

Brody Complex Utility Infrastructure Improvements Phase I

  • On schedule for August completion
  • Replacing the steam systems — steam vault construction is underway
  • New water main tie-ins are on going 

Brody Hall Renovation

  • First floor demolition is underway
  • First floor north is demoed and will be used as a temporary dining area in the fall
  • The dining room renovation is about 70 percent complete
  • Asbestos abatement is about 98 percent complete
  • Second floor demolition is underway

Cyclotron

  • Check out the virtual tour of the project.
  • Area A (High-bay area):  
  • This is substantially complete and ready for the Department of Energy Open House scheduled for Friday, June 12. 
  • Area B (Four-story office addition):  
  • Finishing up installation of exterior metal sheeting and window installation  (i.e. “curtain wall” is 95 percent complete)
  • Continuing installation of metal studs and drywall for the completion of in-walls. 
  • Plumbing inspection is complete on all floors and electrical inspection is complete on second, third and fourth floors. 
  • Elevator staging and installation has begun. 
  • Still hoping to meet goal of occupancy of the second floor for DOE in mid-July. 
  • Parking lot closure (East of Geography Building/Snyder Hall)
  • Next week begins pre-construction
  • Will be substantially early August

The New Farm Lane — Underpasses Construction

  • Continuing work on wet wells
  • South pump station mostly complete
  • Work continues
  • Going extremely quickly
  • Electrical ductwork is complete
  • Beginning to place fences and landscaping is starting
  • Service Road
  • Cement pouring for curbs is complete
  • Storm sewers along Trowbridge Road are complete
  • Half of the retaining walls are complete
  • Concrete walls are mostly complete
  • Lot 89 access is only from Mt. Hope at this time
  • North pumphouse is complete 
Q: East of Lot 89, why is the storage soil that’s above Mt. Hope Road so high?
A: It will be pushed over into another area for future parking lot expansion.
Q: What is the current schedule?
A: Late September, but it still too soon to identify an official date.
 

Crescent and Middlevale Roads — Phase V

  • Finishing the last section of the road
  • The construction extends to Harrison Road
  • Installing underground facilities
  • Almost all storm sewers are complete

Wilson and Birch Roads — Steam

  • All underground work is complete
  • Asphalt down as of June 11
  • All sidewalks are complete
  • Continue work on Wilson steam tunnels
  • Work in Wilson/Holden Hall parking lots
  • Segment 4 — Will stay unpaved until west portion is complete
  • Wilson to Birch will all be paved together

Ramp Restoration and Maintenance: Ramps, 1, 2, 3, 5

  • Construction begins after June 30, around July 4 weekend
  • Ramp 2
    • Minor interruptions
  • Ramp 5
    • Some parking space closures
    • Expansion joint replacement
  • Ramp 3
    • Top two tiers of the ramp
    • Parking space closures
    • Expansion joint replacement
  • Ramp 1
    • Expansion joint replacement
  • Phasing construction now — little impacts
  • Tentative timeline is from June 30 to Aug. 21
  • Signs are being changed to better reflect “partial” closures vs. “complete” closures
  • Parking and loading dock impacts (Owen Graduate Hall Refurbishment)
  • Re-pouring the loading dock area

Owen Hall

  • Renovating the dining area — it has been demoed
  • Will start the partition in the next few weeks
  • Running double shifts to complete work

Mary Mayo Hall Renovations

  • Substantially complete by the end of June
  • Residents able to move in mid-July
  • The main floor is complete
  • Landscape starting week of June 15
  • Pictures to come at next meeting to showcase dramatic changes

Water Main Installation by Fee Hall

  • There have been some traffic issues because of closures
  • On schedule with construction
  • Water main was leaking earlier this month, but repairs have been made
  • The Conrad loop drive and Akers Road will be open by June 18
  • Akers Road is accessible
  • Construction is working its way south
  • West Akers to north Akers should be finished by June 15
