Cyclotron and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Civil Construction
  • The construction of this project will be broken into two components, Phase 2a and Phase 2b
  • Phase 2a will be constructed from May to August  2011
    • The project will involve tying a current steam tunnel into a new steam tunnel and bringing new services into the NSCL block and FRIB sites. The tunnel will currently be going through the building structure, so it needs to be relocated
    • Will provide primary service to the existing building
  • Phase 2b
    • This project will be more extensive
    • Expecting that funds will be available October 2011
    • The existing steam tunnel will be extended up and around the future FRIB addition – ties into existing Business College tunnel
    • Bogue Street will be shut down to through traffic and pedestrians starting in the Fall of 2011 and will remain closed until October 2015
    • The start date dictated on when funding is received for the excavation part of FRIB – if funding slides – the construction will start late 2011, early 2012 in order for construction to move fluidly
    • Wharton Center access along Bogue will be provided. The same detour plan used during the Wharton Center addition will be implemented
    • 4.6 million dollar construction costs
Q: Just to clarify, Bogue Street will remain shut down until early 2015?
A: Yes. Because FRIB is a multi-year project, closing Bogue Street will allow us to construct the “envelope” to contain all the areas that will house technology.

Q: Is the MSU trailer staying in its current location? Will the Skanska trailer be moved?
A: The MSU trailer will remain in its location. Skanska is here primarily for phase 2a, if Skanska bids on the conventional facilities package and wins their trailer would stay.

Wells Hall Addition
  • Wells Hall construction is on budget and on schedule
  • When traveling on Red Cedar Road past Wells Hall, pedestrians must use the temporary sidewalk built. The road is not a sidewalk
  • MSU Police suggest using Lot 79 for Wells overflow parking
  • Alternate bike parking has been constructed
  • Red Cedar Road will be close from May 9 to June 6 from Shaw Lane to the turnaround drive at the north part of Wells. Only MSU service vehicles will be allowed access
  • Fun fact: We’ve performed 20,293 man hours with no recordable injuries or loss of time
  • The shell of the building is going up and the crane will be gone in about two weeks
  • Question from last time: Bolt vs. weld connection
  • No right or wrong answer – they both have their place
  • Decks are going down and should be poured by the end of March if weather permits. Steel cannot be set in bad weather
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum
  • Most of steel has been delivered and is on site. This week steel began being erected. The steel beams are sloped at about 55 degrees
  • Concrete still needs to be poured on one architectural wall, an elevator pit and a non-architectural wall
  • Steel will be the main focus for about the next month and a half
  • Bolted connections are being used for the steel with the base plate being embedded into the concrete
  • Steel will go up and then the curtain wall will be installed
  • Detour for East Circle Drive continues to be up and will stay in place until August 2011. No change to the pedestrian routes
  • Barrier free project at the north end of Student Services – fence projects out into Lot 8 – fence will be maintained until the spring
Q: Any possibility that the August opening of East Circle would slide?
A: No, that is a make it or break it deadline.

Q: Will that road be reworked before it’s opened?
A: Yes, the road will slide south toward Student Services, eliminating the angled parking in front of the building. Bike lanes will also be installed.

Plant Science Expansion
  • Walls are going up in basement and equipment is being installed
  • The auditorium located above the mechanical room will have an acoustical treatment inside the floor. This keeps sound from the mechanical room from entering the auditorium
  • All ductwork, fire protection, plumbing and electrical is done and metal studs are being constructed
  • Starting to solicit prices to finish the 4th floor space
  • All masonry is done on the west side of the building
  • Wilson Road will continue to have a one lane closure until the end of the project
Cyclotron Office Addition Phase 2
  • Cyclotron has steel going up which includes four stories and a penthouse
  • The foundation is complete
  • The two buildings will tie together with a connector bridge
  • Phase II will be brick
Cyclotron High Bay Addition
  • Foundations are in
  • Hoping next week steel will start being erected
Emmons Hall Renovation
  • Road in Brody Complex will be opening late May – early June
  • New glass stairwell on the east side has been installed
  • The student rooms all have new flooring, new paint and new convector covers. The ceilings were also painted and new lighting was installed
  • Existing balcony space has been converted and nine additional student rooms were gained
  • Fixtures installed are green fixtures – solar powered – can be run off natural and artificial light
  • Hard surface counter tops installed and tile application in bathroom is in progress
  • New student lightings in student hall ways
  • There will be a kitchen area on the first floor for students to use
Brody Hall
  • The second floor of Brody is done and work is taking place entirely on the first floor
  • At this time, a big portion of work is electrical
  • New classrooms have been installed. The classrooms can serve as three separate classrooms or can be formed into one large classroom
  • By the end of next week all flooring will hopefully be laid
  • Movable furnishings will be in the office areas so there can be work space for students
  • All doors, hardware installed on office areas
  • Column covers are being installed
  • Glass work still being done on north side
  • All bathrooms in Brody have the green fixtures
Campus Master Plan update
  • The update is done every five years to help guide long-term development of campus
  • It is a division of Campus Planning and Administration
  • Spring public open houses will be held March 31 and April 1 at the International Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Q: Is the Bogue Street bridge MSU owned?
A: It is owned by the city.

Q: Are there any talks about renovating the pool at IM West?
A: There has not been anything specific. The Master Plan won’t often deal with the renovation of a specific facility, it focuses primarily on the effects to the entire campus.
