Construction Planning and Progress Meeting

Overview: Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Commissioning efforts across campus
 
  • Department established in summer 2007
    • Reports to Gus Gosselin, Director of Building Services
  • Department mission
    • Optimize the operation of energy-consuming equipment 
    • Address building performing issues
    • We ensure we “get what we are paying for” on new construction projects
    • Sustain building performance
    • Increase occupant comfort
  • New construction commissioning
    • Verify design, construction and equipment of buildings as per MSU requirements 
    • Design: a building is cheaper to fix on paper versus once it has been built
    • Construction: verify correct equipment delivery, installation and start-up activities
    • Hand-off: verify that all documents received reach all involved parties
  • Existing building commissioning
    • Driving force for department creation – meet campus energy goals
    • 114 main campus buildings slated for existing building commissioning 
    • 77 general fund buildings -  Five years
    • 32 Residential and Hospitality Services buildings – 10 years
    • Five athletics buildings – Five years
    • Verification through documentation, collection, system evaluation, and non-intrusive low-cost modifications to ensure building is operation to building requirements

    • Anthony Hall
    • Built in 1957
    • Renovated in 1997
    • 350,000 square feet
    • Completely modernized with state-of-the-art labs, etc.
    • Team consists of commissioning teams and two contracted firms

Campus snow plan
  • Be snow safe!
    • Drive carefully
    • Dress warmly
    • Wear sensible shoes
    • Watch where you are walking
    • Check the forecast before you head outside
  • Safety
    • Please do not walk out in front of snow plows; they are very difficult to stop
    • Make eye contact with the driver before crossing
  • Salting
    • Call 355-7750 for help with icy spots
    • Please do not over salt; it can cause damage to turf
    • Remember to salt when you see an icy spot
  • Sidewalks
    • Please do not park so that parts of your vehicle so that parts overhang the sidewalk
  • Snow stacking
    • Please do not park in un-plowed areas
    • Parking in snow stacking locations will result in a ticket
    • Approximately 20,000 parking spaces on campus must be plowed each morning before 8 a.m.
  • Residence hall parking loops
    • Closed from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Bikes
    • Please do not chain bikes to signs, railings, etc.
    • This makes it very difficult to plow and is not allowed on campus

Project updates:

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Utility Relocation Phase I

  • Relocating utilities for the FRIB tunnel to be installed on the south side of the Cyclotron
    • Chilled water has been tied in recently
  • Utilities for the high-bay are being installed on the east side of the building
  • Storm and sanitary sewers almost complete on the south side of the building
Plant Sciences Expansion
  • Two primary activities
    • Erection of structural steel
    • Installation of concrete
  • First floor will be complete by the end of this week
  • Waterproofing is happening at foundation level
  • Concrete in basement being installed for mechanics areas
  • Lane closure on Wilson Road still in effect
    • Will be removed for home football game activities
Emmons Hall Renovation 
  • Emmons entrance of Brody is closed until 2011
  • Building must be enclosed before winter for heating purposes
    • Heat is scheduled to turn on next week
  • Framing for glass has been installed
    • Glass is currently being installed
  • Concrete is being poured as much as possible before winter
  • Stairwells are still open areas 
  • Roof has been ballasted; now waterproofed and dry
  • Penthouse is roofed on top, siding is last to go in
  • New handicap accessible ramps are being installed in place of some interior stairs 
Brody Hall Renovation
  • Most of the landscaping is done and the exterior is basically complete
  • Office area on the first floor has complete plasterwork and will be painted soon
  • Most of the first floor framing has been completed
  • 85 percent complete of overhead mechanical work is complete
  • Bathrooms are complete with masonry and paint, being tiled currently
  • The Sparty’s coffee shop will be located near the front entrance of the building
    • Self-service coolers have been installed
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum
  • Pouring concrete deck
    • A tremendous amount of steel being used for this structure
  • More of the site around the building will be able to be used
  • Concrete poured on first floor deck
    • Workers used platforms to spread weight and level concrete
  • Forms for interior walls are going up
    • Plywood formwork will be used as a mold for the concrete and leave imprints; this idea is directly from the architect’s plan
  • Non-architectural wall uses massive steel reinforcement
  • East Circle Drive will continue to be closed until December 2011
  • Snow melt is being installed as well as an accessible ramp in front of Student Services Building north entrance
    • The entrance will reopen in January 2011
Wells Hall Addition
  • A temporary sidewalk has been constructed on the west side of Red Cedar Road
    • Trying to keep pedestrians out of the road
  • Exterior walls on B-wing are down and work is ongoing
  • The floor will be demolished and HVAC systems replaced 
  • Demolition is about 85 percent complete now
  • Digging in rooms to install micro piles and caps next week 
  • Micro piles are used to support the steel structure of the building
    • Steel is going up in mid-December
    • The park side of the building and the B-wing (including the coffee shop) will be live as of fall 2011
