Construction Planning and Progress Meeting
118 Eppley Center
October 14, 2010

Overview: Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Project updates:

Wells Hall Addition

  • Parking for faculty and staff is now located in the south lot of Spartan Stadium
  • This project has closed the section of sidewalk located just west of Wells Hall
    • In an effort to deter pedestrians from walking in the road, a temporary asphalt sidewalk has been installed on the west side of Red Cedar Road.
  • Materials from this project are being divided and sorted for recycling purposes
  • The only pedestrian handicap-accessible entrance and exit to Wells is now located on the east side of the building between the A and B wings
  • The construction trailers are located just east of the Shaw Lane Power Plant
  • New sanitary and storm piping is currently being installed underground
  • The main construction traffic entrance is located at the southwest corner of the site near the loading dock
 
Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Utility Relocation Phase I
  • Chilled water tie-ins will occur around the Cyclotron during next week and the week after
  • Storm lines and manholes are being installed to the east of the Cyclotron
    • This part of the project will last for five weeks
Plant Science Expansion
  • The foundation walls are nearly complete
    • The floor of the foundation is complete
    • Structural steel will be the next phase, along with underground utilities in the basement
  • The crane at the site stands at 230 feet
  • The lane closure on Wilson Road will be removed this Friday for the homecoming festivities this weekend
  • The lane closure will be replaced after the football game
    • The closure will be lifted for remaining football events
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum 
  • The architectural concrete pours on the lower level are complete
    • The first deck is being worked on now
  • When a wall is poured with the concrete, it is protected with wood and plastic
  • Once the first deck is poured, the next level can be worked on
  • Waterproofing is underway for the exterior of the building
    • Temporary wells currently control the water onsite
      • These will be removed before completion
  • Backfill on the site foundation has begun
  • Waterproofing and insulation will continue on the structure
  • The detour on East Circle Drive will remain until December 2011
  • A separate barrier-free project is happening at the main entrance of the Student Services Building
    • The project will continue until December 2010
    • Current barrier-free parking is located in Lot 8, located just west of Student Services
    • The current barrier-free entrance into Student Services is located on the east side of the building
Brody Hall Renovation 
  • On Oct. 13, we celebrated the grand opening of Brody Square
  • First floor construction continues
    • Convenience store area
    • Office areas
    • Student study areas
    • Residential and Hospitality Services offices
  • Exterior patio furniture has been installed
  • Light garden
    • The campus arborist will be doing studies on the river birches to see how effectively the growth rate of the trees can be controlled.
Emmons Hall Renovation 
  • About 35 percent complete with project
  • The majority of traffic near Emmons has to enter Brody Neighborhood from the Michigan Avenue entrance 
  • Pedestrian sidewalk on Harrison Road (in front of Emmons) is open 
  • The front stairwell of Emmons will be enclosed in glass
    • Using glass to bring in a lot of natural light
  • All new resident windows are energy efficient 
  • Window replacements will be included in all renovations in Brody Neighborhood
  • Recycling is happening with brick, limestone, etc.
  • Nine new resident rooms have been created from balcony areas
  • Roof is being covered with tar
    • Penthouse is nearly complete 
    • The roof will be finished soon
