Overview:
Construction Junctions are the Physical Plant’s monthly public meeting designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction. Agenda items included:

Project Notes/Questions:

Roads — East Circle Drive Reconstruction

  • Currently, East Circle Drive does not accommodate needs
  • Will add bike lanes, revamp drive, widen road
  • Will remove the loop drive through Olin Health Center
  • Reduce intersections, future plan is to include a traffic light
  • On-street parking will be removed with the exception of handicapped parking spots
  • Phase I
    • Focus on section East Circle Drive near the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum future site
    • Move the road 15 feet south
    • Included in Broad Art Museum project schedule
    • A portion of East Circle will be closed during Broad Art Museum construction
    • West of Old Horticulture building will remain open during construction
Q: Where will the handicap parking be for the Museum?
A: In Lot 8, which is next to the Student Services building and in the Berkey Service yard.
Q: How will people be able to access to the Student Services building during construction?
A: The east entrance will be barrier free and open. The north door access is not barrier free yet. 

Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum

  • Groundbreaking will be held in March 2010, completion two years later
  • East Circle Drive will stay open until the end of school, then will close for 13 to 14 months
  • The East Circle Drive project and the Broad Museum project will be intertwined
  • Will accommodate pedestrian traffic
  • Western and eastern gateways for pedestrians
  • West plaza funnels pedestrian traffic down the new Benefactors Plaza
  • Two-story building
  • Stainless steel exterior material as rain-screen design
  • Unique design
  • Main east/west corridors link both main entrances
  • First floor
  • Education, cafe and gift shop
  • Permanent art collection area
  • Works on paper and two-story contemporary gallery
  • Second floor
  • Special exhibition galleries with overlook
  • Contemporary gallery; permanent collection gallery
  • Basement
  • Mechanical, electrical and building support spaces
  • Raw storage and art handling area
  • Administrative offices, news media gallery, benefactors gallery
Q: Will there be wood floors or concrete in the museum?
A: There will be concrete in the corridor areas and wood in the galleries.
Q: Will there be a problem with the reflection of the building?
A: There shouldn’t be any problems since stainless steel is textured and folded plate design. It will be more of a glow than a glare.

Plant Sciences Expansion 

  • Project was approved last year by the Board of Trustees
  • Expansion will maximize the research space and provide connection between Plant & Soil Sciences and Plant Biology
  • Addition on north side of Plant & Soil Sciences
  • Connected on all floors
  • Auditorium and lecture hall
  • Garden in front and back areas of expansion
  • Many pedestrian walkways will be added
  • Basement
  • Mechanical area
  • First floor
  • Lecture hall
  • Leisure space
  • Collaboration and research space
  • Second/third floor
  • Open labs
  • Office space
  • Collaboration space
  • Fourth floor
  • More possible space for expansion
  • Start construction in Spring 2010
  • Occupied by 2012 
Be(ing) Spartan Green: Natural lighting will be optimized in the expansion

Q: Will there be refreshments?
A: In the leisure space, in the first floor area.

Brody Complex Utility Infrastructure Improvements — Phase II 

  • Project will take place Feburary-April 2010
  • Will tie into East Lansing watermain
  • Two connections will be made 

Steam/Water/Communication Distribution — Repairs And Improvements— Physical Plant, Landscape Services, DPPS, Audio/Speech

  • Connection to the communication line for the Red Cedar intersection project and tie into Wilson Road
  • Extending watermain loop from Wilson Road to DPPS
  • Steam and vaults will be complete by mid-November
  • Replacing bad steam joints
  • May also repair parking lot
  • New pavement in construction area
  • Begin May 2010, with completion August 2010 
Q: How will people get into the parking lot?
A: We are still phasing that portion.

Emergency Steam Distribution Repairs: Steam Tunnel Vault 92-93 

  • Will begin Oct. 30
  • No road closure during week, will close on the weekend
  • That Saturday and Sunday road will be closed
  • Arch tunnel replacement
  • Wall on each side of tunnel
  • Uncover and replace peastone to secure the area
  • Short-term fix
  • In the future, need to replace entire road
Q: Do we have any experience with peastone?
A: Yes, we can’t use tar in this area.

The New Farm Lane — Underpasses Construction

  • Open to traffic
  • Lane closures in the fall for landscaping
  • Pedestrian railing at the CSX side needs to be completed
  • Pump station needs to finished
  • Two-year warrantee with contractors for landscape
  • Road closed Friday, Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the grand opening event 

Wharton Center

  • Substantially complete on Oct. 1
  • Completely occupied
  • Placing more trees at site 

Brody Hall Renovation

  • Demolition complete in the building
  • Temporary kitchen is up and running
  • 15 percent complete 

Secchia Center

  • Project for the College of Human Medicine
  • 70 percent complete
  • On schedule and on budget
  • Furniture arrives in February
  • Finishing glass work and outside of the building
  • Will open in June 2010 

Be(ing) Spartan Green: The building's white roof is an energy-saver because it absorbs less heat than dark roofs.

March 4, 2013— Infrastructure Planning and Facilities is the new unit under the governance of Ron Flinn, recently appointed Vice President for Strategic Infrastructure Planning and Facilities.
