Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB)

In-Planning/Design

Description: In December 2008, it was announced that the U.S. Department of Energy had named Michigan State University’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) as the new home to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) project.

The Cyclotron building, which is located west of Bogue Street between East Shaw Lane and Wilson Road, will need additional space to support the FRIB as planning and conceptual design activities increase. Projects such as the New High-Bay Addition and the Office Addition – Phase 2 are occurring at the Cyclotron in an effort to accommodate the changes needed for FRIB.

As a national user facility, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society.

Timeline: FRIB will take approximately 10 years for MSU to design and build. Construction is expected to begin in 2013 with completion in 2020.
