FRIB/Plant Science Utility Relocation Phase I

Completed: October 2012

Description: This is a partial package to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) project that is scheduled to start in 2013. Prior to the start of FRIB, the university must relocate utilities to support it. This project coordinates the FRIB utility relocation work (Phase I) with the Plant and Soil Sciences Building construction site work, thus eliminating construction coordination conflicts (timing and staging) between the two projects. The project also includes the relocation of the chilled water, natural gas, sanitary and storm sewers, domestic water, communication and electrical distribution.

Additionally, the coordination of these two projects will remove the need to shutdown Wilson Road for four years in a row and provides the least amount of disruption to campus operations.

  • In order to support FRIB, several utilities need to be rerouted
  • Project will be expedited in order to save money
  • Sewers will be rerouted
  • Reroute existing utilities to support new buildings
  • 16 trees will be removed during the project
  • 33 trees will be transplanted, with 18 returning to the site after construction and 15 moved to other locations on campus

Timeline: Construction will begin in May 2010 and end in mid-November 2010.

Impacts to pedestrians, bikers, motorists:

  • One lane of eastbound Wilson Road in the project area will be closed for approximately one year (for the neighboring Plant Science expansion project). The closure will be lifted on football Saturdays and for major events.
