Harrison Road Construction (City of East Lansing)

Completed: September 2010

Map of Harrison Road that describes the phases of construction

Description: The Harrison Road Reconstruction project provided much-needed improvements to the roadway in the form of upgrades and additions. The project included: Intermittent curb and drive approach replacement, sidewalk and sidewalk ramp improvements, minor storm and sanitary sewer replacement, and a newly paved asphalt road surface. A new water main was also added, replacing the 6-inch and 10-inch current mains with a 16-inch main. The new main  has related valves and fire hydrants installed. The lane configurations of Harrison Road remained the same.

Construction took place two phases between Trowbridge Road and Kalamazoo Street, with the existing pavement being pulverized and some base removal and replacement. For more information, visit the City of East Lansing’s construction website.

  • Phase I
    • Concentrated on southbound section between Kalamazoo and Shaw Lane
    • Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to the east side of the median.
    • Marigold, Lilac, and Shaw were closed at Harrison Road
  • Phase II
    • Concentrated on the northbound section between Kalamazoo and Shaw
    • Traffic remained reduced to one lane in each direction but shifted to the west side of the median.
    • Marigold, Lilac, and Shaw will remain closed at Harrison Road
    • Phase II of the project is expected to end by Aug. 20, and then it will sit idle until June 2011

Timeline: Construction began in early June and was completed by mid-August 2010. The project resumed in summer 2011 for Phase III.

Impacts to pedestrians, bikers, motorists:

  • Nashville Construction Company will begin Phase II of the Harrison Road Reconstruction project on Tuesday, July 27. Northbound and southbound Harrison Road traffic will shift to the west side of the median island to facilitate the reconstruction of the northbound lanes. Traffic will remain in one lane in each direction between Kalamazoo Street and Lilac Avenue for the duration of Phase II, which is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 20.
  • CSX Corporation will close Harrison Road between North Crescent and Service roads beginning Monday, Aug. 2 through Wednesday, Aug. 11, to replace the railroad crossing. Harrison Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Motorists should expect delays and are asked to seek an alternate route to their destination during this closure.
    • Detour routes for the area:
      • The southbound detour will be Service Road to Farm Lane to Mt. Hope Road
      • The northbound detour will be Mt. Hope Road to Farm Lane to Service Road
